Flu season typically begins in April, so now is the perfect time to protect yourself, your loved ones and your community by getting the flu vaccine. At our Werribee clinic, flu shots are now available for the 2025 season. Whether you’re young, older, healthy or managing a chronic condition, the flu vaccine is a simple way to help reduce your risk of getting seriously unwell this winter.

Why Is the Flu Vaccine Important?
Influenza, or “the flu”, is more than just a bad cold. It’s a highly contagious respiratory illness that can lead to serious complications, especially for young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart disease.
Each year, thousands of Australians are hospitalised due to the flu and complications such as pneumonia. The virus changes from year to year, which means last year’s vaccine may no longer be effective. That’s why it’s important to get vaccinated annually. Each year’s flu shot is designed to protect against the most common and likely circulating strains for that particular flu season.
How the Flu Vaccine Works
The flu vaccine helps your immune system recognise and fight off the influenza virus. Contrary to common myths, it won’t give you the flu but it does train your body to respond more effectively if you’re exposed to the virus. The flu vaccine typically takes two weeks to work, so the earlier you get your vaccination this flu season, the better.
By getting vaccinated, you’re also helping to protect others in the community. This includes those who are more vulnerable and may not be able to be vaccinated themselves, such as babies under six months of age or people with compromised immune systems.
Who Should Get the Flu Shot?
The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone aged six months and older. It’s especially important for:
People aged 65 and over
Pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
Children aged 6 months to under 5 years
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over
Anyone with a chronic medical condition
Healthcare and aged care workers
Carers of people who are at high risk
Many people in these groups are eligible for a free flu shot under the National Immunisation Program.
If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible or if the flu vaccine is right for you, our team is happy to talk through your options.

What to Expect at Your Appointment
Getting the flu shot is quick and straightforward. Your appointment will usually take no more than 10 to 15 minutes, including a short observation period afterward. Most people experience minimal side effects, with the most commonly reported being a sore arm or slight fatigue for a day or two.
As with all medical procedures or medicines, the flu shot is not without risk. Please speak with our healthcare professional for more information.
We also offer flu shots for children and can help parents feel confident about what to expect during their child’s visit.
If you’d like to receive your flu shot during another appointment (such as a general check-up or chronic disease review), just let us know when you book as we may need to book you in for a flu shot with our nurse.
Can I Get the Flu Shot and COVID-19 Vaccine Together?
Yes. It’s safe to have the flu vaccine and COVID-19 vaccine on the same day, if both are due. Staying up to date with both vaccines gives you the best protection heading into the cooler months when respiratory illnesses are more common.
How Much Does the Flu Shot Cost?
Costs vary from clinic to clinic, but here at The Clinic in Werribee, we charge $15. You may be eligible for a free flu shot if you fall into a high-risk category such as being immune compromised or pregnant. Please contact us for more information on whether you are eligible for a free flu shot.
